Rose Colored Glasses or Blurred Vision will both kill your Sales Force.

So I finally had to break down and get my eyes checked - sure enough I need a prescription. I could have tried to self diagnose and by a pair of $10 reading glasses but that - so the Doctor told me would have been a mistake. I thought her expert opinion was interesting.

1. They could make the problem worse over time.

2. They wouldn't really fix all the problems I was having with my eyes.

3. They wouldn't be customized to my unique issue.

4. (laughing) and there are not as many nice styles to pick from and you end up looking silly.

So that started me thinking about the issue we face when a CEO tries to "self diagnose" his sales force. He usually makes the problem worse over time, they definitely don't fix their unique problem because they have blurred vision regarding their sales people and they often end up looking pretty silly to boot.

The earliest historical reference to magnification dates back to ancient Egypt in the 8th century BC, which depict "simple glass meniscal lenses". But given the advances in technology who would turn to these crude devices to fix your vision. There have also been advances in the way you evaluate your sales force - come on, jump into the 21st century!

Frank - this is a great metaphor for what is going on out there right now. Even when the CEO's call or write in, they think they know what the problems are and they aren't even close!
