Dave Kurlan is a top-rated speaker, best-selling author, sales thought leader and highly regarded sales development expert.
Yesterday, I went slightly off topic and posted about one difference between effective and ineffective leaders. In an ironic turn of events, I received an email on behalf of Tom Peters today informing me that they
"vote on blogroll additions, and the majority of people at tompeters.com voted your blog down."
Do I care if Tom Peters links to my blog? While my ego would undoubtedly prefer it, my ego is not why I post to this blog almost daily. My mission here is to help companies build stronger sales management and more effective salespeople.
Back to their comment, and specifically, "the majority of people".
Jim Collins (I love his work and his books) has a council (as he recommends) and they vote on whether or not he should accept a speaking engagement (3 years ago it was $45,000). In contrast, Guy Kawaskaki, the prototype for business evangelism, happily takes his fee ($25,000 3 years ago) and doesn't have to answer to anyone.
Jim and Tom are both Management Gurus while Guy is more of a marketing - guy. Seth Godin is another marketing guy who probably doesn't ask anyone before making a decision. And then there are the sales gurus and, I can assure you that, without exception, the good ones make their own decisions!
So, are the issues identified in my previous post (you have to read it this time) taught by the management gurus or is it just a huge coincidence that they need to build consensus? Remember, I'm not against consensus, just against unnecessary consensus.
I'll let you be the judge.
